Skills for Life Certificates
Quantum Group's Mercia College delivers:
- Marked improvement in your literacy and numeracy.
- Trusted, experienced tutors who visit you where you work.
- Programmes that can be designed to fit your NVQ studies.
In common with many other industries the health and care sectors often need to recruit staff from far afield and from all parts of society. Inevitably this means that some new staff, whilst immediately making a contribution in the workplace and having high future potential, lack the basic skills of language and arithmetic. This can affect both the care they give and their ability to study for the formal qualifications that they need.
Quantum Group’s growing programme of NVQs has, in turn, required the creation of a Skills for Life team, managed by Angela Breheney (pictured above). Before joining us Angela spent seven years in the Skills for Life Department at a regional college. Her team here at Quantum has already helped hundreds of carers and other workers with their literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (basic maths). Our Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 courses for literacy and numeracy are all accredited by Education Development International (EDI) and the Quantum Group is a member of the government’s Register of Learning Providers. This will be supplemented in 2010 with Matrix Standard certification.
We offer Skills for Life certificates in:
Starting a Skills for Life Certificate
We begin by giving the learner a one-to-one personal assessment, usually lasting 30 minutes. We then agree an Individual Learning Plan, which can be harmonised with their NVQ studies to save time, which in turn take account of their literacy and numeracy levels. Learning then takes place on a self-study basis, using our literature, along with some small group work, personal coaching and support. Progression to the award is assessed by taking online or paper-based practice tests as part of individualised training sessions, before taking the main test for the certificate(s) when ready to do so. Re-sits are possible at no extra charge, subject to the module’s maximum permitted duration.
Benefits of Skills for Life qualifications from Quantum:
- Personalised tuition and support from highly experienced tutors.
- Competitively priced and convenient programmes.
- First attempt pass rates well above the average for our region.
