Numeracy

altThis course helps learners with the everyday use of maths; how to use and understand numbers to make decisions, follow or issue instructions and be more precise in any situation. Besides these everyday applications better maths could help you improve your job prospects and start studying for a major qualification such as a NVQ.

New skills you will learn could include:

  • Measurements and measuring, which will help from anything from patient care to trying out new recipes at home.
  • Using calculators to do basic sums, check transactions like your pay and do a household budget to save for holidays.
  • Present data from other learning exercises and reports at work; learn how to understand news and reports in the media with a technical or scientific flavour.

Levels available

We offer Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in Numeracy, using the nationally recognised curriculum, approved by Education Development International, a leading accredited awarding body.

How the course works

Having assessed your current numeracy level, you will start a programme of supported study usually lasting 26 weeks (about half a year). You will receive a study pack as well as regular contact and visits from your dedicated tutor. The course content is very oriented to real life; you will learn more about basic arithmetic (counting, dividing etc) before studying topics including fractions, measurements, geometry, presenting number data. These skills are taught using real-life examples such as shopping, paying bills, travelling and making a variety of decisions. You will need to do some study and preparation on your own and you will be encouraged to link with others in a study group, possibly where you work. However you won’t be left on your own; besides regular one-to-one visits your tutor will always be available to advise you.
Your progression on the course is tested by the coursework you submit rather than by exams, and you will get plenty of feedback and opportunities to re-submit work.
