Brief Description: Up to one in ten older people in the UK are malnourished, and NICE has identified lack of training in care homes on the importance of nutrition as a contributing factor. This course will equip learners with both a theoretical understanding of nutrition and assessing individual needs, as well as methods to improve nutrition through balanced and enjoyable diet and meals.
Learning Outcomes: Learners will gain an understanding of: underlying causes of malnourishment in the elderly; identifying at-risk individuals using techniques such as Body Mass Index (BMI) and the MUST tool; clinical conditions such as dysphagia; appropriate strategies for individuals as part of Care Planning; practical techniques to enhance mealtimes for servise users.
Suitable for: Care staff with responsibility for supervising meals and planning catering.
